Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants for K-series awards (http://grants.nih.gov/training/careerdevelopmentawards.htm) of a continuation of policy and procedure regarding acceptance, peer review, and funding of investigator-initiated clinical trials and studies. This is a re-issuance of the NIAID policy stated in http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-AI-05-050.html .

NIAID will not accept K-series applications proposing to conduct new, free-standing clinical trials or studies. Any proposed clinical trial or study in a K application must be part of an ongoing clinical trial or program, generally the mentor’s. Career development applicants are encouraged to participate in the planning, design, and implementation of these ongoing clinical trials and studies in order to gain the training and experience necessary to become independent clinical investigators.
