Discussion Items I. Developing a "Roadmap" for the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center Dr. Gallin summarized the history and accomplishments of the NIH Clinical Center from its conception in the 1940s through the current status and anticipated completion of the new Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center (CRC). He stressed the need for a roadmap to ensure optimal utilization of the CRC and suggested that Drs. Gottesman and Spiegel, as co-chairs of the Clinical Center Research Steering Committee, coordinate a retreat to include NIH leadership and principal investigators of clinical trials to develop such a plan. After the related discussion, Dr. Zerhouni pointed out that two issues had emerged that must be addressed in ensuring we achieve the goal of optimal utilization: the need to address space allocation methodically and completely and the need to address how to implement those decisions most effectively. He noted that while a retreat could deal with the latter issue of "how to," a parallel process should revisit space assignments in the CRC. Dr. Gallin said that he would assist Drs. Spiegel and Gottesman in leading a retreat to discuss how to optimally utilize the CRC. Dr. Gottesman was charged with developing a proposal to address the issue of space allocation. II. Visit by the Surgeon General of the United States – Dr. Richard Carmona Dr. Carmona began by mentioning that he had already spoken with a number of members of the group on how best to support NIH efforts while also advancing the President's charge to improve the Public Health Service, especially in the areas of prevention and preparedness. He welcomed this meeting as part of an ongoing dialogue and stressed the common agenda of the PHS and NIH – the enhancement of the health and wellness of the Country. After a lively discussion on a range of issues, including the need for improved physical education of today's youth and education of young people on how to best make health-related decisions, Dr. Zerhouni and Dr. Carmona agreed to continue to coordinate PHS and NIH efforts to create what Dr. Carmona referred to as a legacy of change in areas such as prevention and health disparities. III. Information Items Mr. Self invited everyone to the upcoming commemoration of Martin Luther King , Jr., at which former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder is scheduled to speak, and he expressed appreciation for the NIH leadership support of the recent event in commemoration of Native Americans. Dale Johnson |
