What's New at the National Institute on Drug Abuse

UPCOMING EVENT:
The upcoming HBO documentary called Addiction, is scheduled to air Thursday, March 15 from 9:00 to 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. The 90-minute program, produced in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), is aimed at helping Americans understand addiction as a treatable brain disease, as well as spotlighting new medical advancements.
The documentary will explore many elements of drug and alcohol addiction, through the eyes of those who are addicted and those of the scientific experts working to better understand and treat this devastating disease.
NIDA has released Brains, Drugs, and Behavior - The Science of Addiction to complement this documentary on Addiction.

Science of Addiction
New advances in science demonstrate that addiction is a brain disease-a disease that is accompanied by disruption of the mechanisms responsible for generating, modulating and controlling an individual's cognitive, emotional, and social behavior.
This new publication is designed to help policy makers and the general public to better understand and educate others about the problem of drug abuse.

Mind Over Matter (8 Booklets-Spanish)
This series encourages young teens to reject drug use by helping them understand the effects of drugs on the brain. In each booklet, Sara Bellum-a budding science student-takes students on a scientific journey to learn about the brain's complex responses to specific drugs, including hallucinogens, inhalants, marijuana, methamphetamine, nicotine, opiates, steroids, and stimulants. This is the first time the series is available in the Spanish language.

NIDA NOTES, Volume 21, Issue 1
The lead story looks at the effectiveness of low-cost incentives in a stimulant abuse treatment program. The Director's Perspective reports on the ongoing problem of steroid abuse and the many risks associated with steroids. Other research looked at ultra rapid detoxification programs; buprenorphine in adolescent opiate addiction; the brain mechanisms of memory in rats; and the potential respiratory consequences of marijuana abuse. This issue also reports on NIDA's July launch of the new criminal justice document in Chicago.

Damage to Specific Part of the Brain May Make Smokers 'Forget' to Smoke (1/25/07)
Preliminary research supported by NIDA has found that some smokers with damage to a part of the brain called the insula may have their addiction to nicotine practically eliminated. The study wss published in the January 26, 2007 issue of the journal Science.

NIDA Launches Centers of Excellence for Physician Information (1/25/07)
NIDA announced the establishment of four Centers of Excellence for Physician Information-these Centers will serve as national models to support the advancement of addiction awareness, prevention, and treatment in primary care practices. The NIDA Centers of Excellence (NIDA COEs) will target physicians-in-training, including medical students and resident physicians in primary care specialties.

NIDA-Sponsored Survey Shows Decrease in Illicit Drug Use among Nation's Teens but Prescription Drug Abuse Remains High (12/21/06)
The 2006 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of eighth, 10th and 12th graders indicated that their past-month use of illicit drugs has dropped 23.2 percent since 2001 (from 19.4 percent in 2001 to 14.9 percent in 2006). By contrast, abuse of prescription opioids remains at unacceptably high levels.
