H.R. 1998—Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act of 2004

On May 7, 2003, Representative Michael Bilirakis (R-FL) introduced H.R. 1998, the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act of 2004. The legislation would encourage the establishment of NIH research consortia in paralysis research. Each consortium is to conduct basic and clinical paralysis research and may 1) focus on advancing treatments and developing therapies in paralysis research, 2) focus on one or more forms of paralysis that result from central nervous system trauma or stroke, 3) facilitate and enhance the dissemination of clinical and scientific findings, and 4) replicate the findings of consortia members for scientific and translational purposes. H.R. 1998 contains a provision addressing NIH rehabilitation research. H.R. 1998 was referred to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. H.R. 1998 is identical to S. 1010, which was introduced on May 7 by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA).
