My career objective is a faculty position in biomedical engineering with a research focus on delivery systems for nucleic acid and protein biotherapeutics. The primary application of these delivery systems will be vaccines for the treatment of cancer and the prevention of infectious diseases, as well as other drug delivery applications. In my Ph.D. studies at Georgia Tech, I developed biodegradable polymeric microparticles, which were used to encapsulate small molecules drugs and proteins. As a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Cancer Institute, I plan to conduct translational research on cancer vaccines, which will involve the pre-clinical and clinical testing of new vaccine formulations. These vaccine formulations will potentially include viral- and yeast-based vaccines as well as polymeric delivery systems for protein antigen-based vaccines. Several strategies will be explored in the area of polymeric delivery systems, such as the use of viscous polymer solutions to form sustained-release antigen depots and the use of microparticles for antigen delivery to dendritic cells. In particular, I plan to engineer microparticle formulations which can achieve simultaneous intracellular delivery of protein or plasmid DNA antigen plus one or more immunostimulatory agents.
