Bioterrorism

A Major in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Pierre Noel serves as a physician in military operations. In this capacity his knowledge and expertise centers on biowarfare. Also involved in advisory and operational capacities for federal law enforcement and federal agencies such as the U.S. departments of Defense and State, Dr. Noel is an advisor to the National Institutes of Health on weapons of mass destruction, disaster planning and biodefense matters.

Concurrent with the above duties, Dr. Noel became chief of the Hematology Service in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center in June of 2000. The emphasis of his medical research at the Clinical Center is on the analysis of bone marrow-related conditions.

Dr. Noel teaches as an adjunct, associate professor of medicine at the U.S. Uniformed Services University. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in his hometown of Montreal, Canada, and a medical degree from the University of Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, Canada. His medical residencies were in Internal Medicine at the University of Sherbrooke and in Hematology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He also received further specialty training in Hematology as a Mayo Foundation Scholar.

Dr. Noel came to the NIH Clinical Center from the Mayo Clinic, where he held appointments in Rochester as consultant, Hematology and Laboratory Medicine, and director, Bone Marrow Transplant Program. He also was consultant, Hematology and Laboratory Medicine; director, Bone Marrow Transplant Program; and chairman, Hematology-Oncology at the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.

Published nationally and internationally on a wide spectrum of clinical and research topics related to hematology and oncology, Dr. Noel is the author and coauthor of numerous papers, book chapters and scientific abstracts. He also lectures extensively around the globe on biowarfare and weapons of mass destruction.

Dr. Noel is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology.
