New NIDDK Publications on Kidney Disease

Decorative photo of a cascade of NIDDK publications

Obesity is closely linked with type 2 diabetes; diabetes in turn can lead to kidney disease. A new boxed set of patient education materials on kidney failure from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) helps patients understand and cope with their disease.

The series contains six booklets and seven fact sheets that explain treatment options for kidney failure and associated complications. A glossary is also included to help patients, family, and friends understand the medical terms associated with kidney failure. The materials, which have been tested for readability with patients and health care professionals, are listed below.

One boxed set is available free of charge from the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC). Additional boxed sets can be ordered from NKUDIC for $10 each.

Bulk quantities of individual publications are also available to health care providers. The first 25 booklets and fact sheets are free of charge. Additional packages of 25 booklets are $10, and additional packages of 25 fact sheets are $5. Contact the clearinghouse by phone at 1-800-891-5390 or (301) 654-4415, by fax at (301) 907-8906, or by email at nkudic@info.niddk.nih.gov for further ordering information.

These publications will soon be published online at www.niddk.nih.gov under “Health Information.” NIDDK’s patient education materials are a public service and are not copyrighted. Users are encouraged to make as many copies as they wish. s
