H.R. 3756—National Commission on Digestive Diseases

On February 3, 2004, Representative Roy Blunt (R-MO) introduced H.R. 3756, a bill to establish a National Commission on Digestive Diseases. Provisions would require the Secretary of HHS, in consultation with the Director of NIH, to establish a National Commission on Digestive Diseases. The Commission would be required to be established within 60 days of enactment of the legislation. Among its responsibilities, the Commission would be required to develop and recommend a long-range plan for the use and organization of national resources to deal with digestive diseases, including research studies into the basic biological processes and mechanisms, investigations related to the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of digestive diseases, and the conduct and subject matter of clinical and translational research trials. The Commission would also be required to make recommendations on estimated expenditures for each of the NIH research institutes that would be involved in activities covered by the long-range plan. H.R. 3756 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
