Upcoming Community Service Events

There are three Community Service events coming up in May:

On Wednesday May 7, we will host the 2nd Graduate Student Blood Drive at the Blood Bank in Building 10. (Those that gave blood in our 1st Blood Drive on March 5, you're eligible to give again!) If you were unable to donate blood last time, here's another chance. This is a great way to support the local NIH community, which is currently experiencing a blood shortage - and the Blood Bank will be giving out donor T-shirts! Reserve a time slot between 8am and 4pm - email your time preference to Kim @baxterkim@mail.nih.gov .

On Wednesday May 14, help us unload boxes of food from the Manna Food Center's Stuff-A-Bus food drive. Four Ride-On buses will be filled with food donations from local Whole Foods grocery stores during the day; we will unpack the food at the Warehouse starting at 9pm.  Email Kimbaxterkim@mail.nih.gov ) if you're interested - maybe we can organize a group to meet for dinner before the volunteer work starts.

In addition, we wanted to let you know about the D.C. Servathon coming up on Saturday May 3. This fundraising/service event will involve 3000 volunteers painting, planting, and building to improve the D.C. Public Schools and save the school district a lot of money. Volunteers are asked to contribute $20 at registration (for tshirt, snacks, supplies) and raise $100 from friends and family to go toward the Greater DC Cares organization, which contributes about $4 million and 80,000 hours of services/skills to the DC area annually! More information is online at http://servathon2008.kintera.org/ or you can contact Cathykolfc@mail.nih.gov ) if you'd like to coordinate participating with other grad students.

As always, let us know if you have suggestions for future community service opportunities!
