The training program at NHLBI is designed to prepare Fellows for positions in Academics either in the U.S. or abroad as well as in Government, Industry or Public Service.  Some examples of recent trainees at NHLBI include:

U. S. Academic Appointments:

Basic Science Departments

Michael Adams, Ph.D.,  Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, Campbell University School of Pharmacy.  Dr. Adams was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Lance Pohl from 2003-2005.  His project involved mechanisms of drug-induced liver toxicity.  He was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Cynthia Ju, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Immunology and Toxicology, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Colorado.  Dr. Ju was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Lance Pohl from 1999-2002.  Her research was in the area of immunotoxicology.

Jeffery Klauda, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Maryland.  Dr. Klauda was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2003-2007.  His research was on molecular modeling. 

Joseph Larkin, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Larkin was a Predoctoral Fellow at the University of Georgia under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks in the Laboratory of Computational Biology from 2004-2006.  His research was on electronic structure and reaction pathway modeling. 

Edward Mills, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Mills was a Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Toren Finkel from 1997-2004.  His research involved a molecular approach to understanding the basis of hyperthermia caused by Ecstasy. 

Jackob Moskovitz, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas..  Dr. Moskovitz was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Earl Stadtman from 1997-2003.  His project was understanding how methionine and methionine sulfoxide can protect cells from oxidative damage.

Smita Sampath, Ph.D., Assistant Professor. Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Yale University.  Dr. Sampath was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the mentorship of Dr. Eliot McVeigh from 2004-2007.  Her project was to develop methods for real-time cardiac MRI imaging.  She was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Sruti Shiva, Ph.D., Assistant Professor. Department of Pharmacology, University of Pittsburgh Medical School.  Dr. Shiva was a Fellow in the Translational Medicine Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Gladwin from 2004-2008.  Her project was to understanding the role of nitric oxide in regulating mitochondrial function and the response to ischemia/reperfusion.  She was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

George Stan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry, University of Cincinnati.  Dr. Stan was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2002-2006.  His research was on molecular modeling.  He received a FARE award  from NIH and was a recipient of a Lenfant Fellowship at NHLBI.  He also received an AHA Scientist Development Grant. 

Mikiei Tanaka, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor, Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatric Medicine, University of Oklahoma.   Dr. Tanaka was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Earl Stadtman from 2000-2008.  His project was understanding how methionine and methionine sulfoxide can protect cells from oxidative damage causes aging and cell death. 

Qize Wei, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biology, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas.  Dr. Wei was a fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Adelstein from 1997-2004.  His research involved understanding the transcriptional regulation of muscle development.  His research was supported by an NHLBI K22 Research Transition Award. Hai-Hui Xue, M.D, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City, Iowa.  Dr. Xue was a Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Warren Leonard from 2000-2006.  His research concerned the regulation of  interleukin 7 receptor alpha-chain gene expression in T cells. Wenjun Zheng, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, University of Buffalo.  Dr. Zheng was a Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2003-2007.  His research concerned multidimensional molecular dynamic models of protein structure. 

Clinical Departments

Thomas Cimato, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Buffalo.  Dr. Cimato was a Fellow in the Cardiology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth Nabel from 2002-2007.  His project involved stem cells in cardiovascular disease. 

Peiman Hematti, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology), University of Wisconsin.  Dr. Hematti was a Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 1999-2004.  His project was involved with modeling human hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy in nonhuman primates.

Aarif Khakoo, M.D., Assistant Professor, Cardiology, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas.  Dr. Khakoo was a Clinical Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Toren Finkel from 2001-2005 as part of the Johns Hopkins University Clinical Training Program.  His research concerned the application of stem cells in cardiovascular therapies. 

Shyama Masilamani, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Medical College of Virginia.  Dr. Masilamani was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Knepper from 1997-2004.  Her research involved understanding the regulation of the expression of renal transporters.  Her research was supported by an NHLBI K22 Research Transition Award

Ivan Rosas, M.D., Lecturer on Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA.  Dr. Rosas was a Clinical Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch from 1997-2005.  His project involved studies of pulmonary fibrosis.  He was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Bipin Savani, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology-Oncology), Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  Dr. Savani was a Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. John Barrett from 2003-2007.  His project was involved with modeling human hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy in nonhuman primates.

Canada

Alexander J. Dick, M.D., Cardiologist, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, Toronto.  Dr. Dick was a Clinical Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch from 2001-2003 under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Lederman.  His research concerned the application of interventional MRI to cardiovascular disease.  A link to his publications at NHLBI is provided here.

Arnold Kristof, M.D.,  Assistant Professor of Medicine, Critical Care Division
Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal.
  Dr. Kristof was a Clinical Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch from 1998-2004 under the mentorship of Dr. Joel Moss.  His research concerned the role of nitric oxide in mediating lung injury. 

Ian Paterson, M.D., C.M., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, University of Alberta.  Dr. Paterson was a Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Andrew Arai from 2002-2004.  His research involved clinical studies of cardiac MRI.

Richard B. Thompson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton.  Dr. Thompson was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the supervision of Dr. Eliot McVeigh from 2000-2003. 

Chile

Pedro Gallardo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.  Dr. Gallardo was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of  Dr. Maurice B. Burg from 2005-2007.  His research signaling mechanisms in renal function. 

China

Jun Lu, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Beijing Capital Medical University.  Dr. Lu was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the supervision of Drs Kevin Brown and Neal Young from 2002 to 2006. Her research involved studies of parviovirus and aplastic anemia.  She was a member of the NHLBI DIR Fellows Advisory Committee.  Link to her publications at NHLBI

Kai-Feng Xu, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Peking Union Medical College.  Dr. Xu was a Visiting Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch under the supervision of Dr. Martha Vaughan from 2002-2005.  His research involved signal transduction pathways involved in vesicular trafficking.

Robert Fenton, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Water and Salt Research Center, University of Aarhus.  Dr.Fenton was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Knepper from 2001-2005.  His research involved understanding the function of renal ion transporters in regulating salt and water balance.  Dr. Fenton received a Lenfant Fellowship for his research accomplishments. Link to his publications at NHLBI.

Mikko Laukkanen, Ph.D., Group Leader, Medicity Research Laboratory, University of Turku.  Dr. Laukkanen was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the direction of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 2002-2005.  His work concerned gene therapy of hematopoietic diseases. 

Germany

Ruth Seggewiss, M.D., Department of Hematology/Oncology, Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik II, University of Würzburg.  Dr. Seggewiss was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 2004-2005. Her work concerned gene therapy of hematopoietic diseases. 

Hungary

Elfrieda Fodor, Ph.D., Staff Scientist, Institute of Biophysics, Biological Research Centre, Szeged, Hungary.  Dr. Fodor was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Cell Biology under the supervision of Dr. Ann Ginsburg from 2003-2007.  His research concerned biophysical approaches to intermolecular interactions. 

Mihály Kovács, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Eötvös University, Budapest.  Dr. Kovács, was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Physiology under the supervision of Dr. James Sellers from 2002-2005.  His research concerned biophysical approaches to intermolec kinetic properties of myosins. India

Siddhartha Jana, Ph.D.,  Assistant Professor, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata.  Dr. Jana was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Cardiology under the supervision of Dr. Robert Adelstein from 2002-2007.  His research concerned the properties of non-muscle myosins.

Japan

Hirofumi Arai, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Fisheries Sciences, Nagasaki University.  Dr. Arai was a Visiting Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch under the direction of Dr. Joel Moss from 2003-2005.  His work concerned the molecular diagnosis of pulmonary disease.

Nanae Harashima, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Immunology, Shimane University School of Medicine.  Dr. Harashima was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Childs from 2005-2007. His work concerned hematopoietic cell transplantation therapies for cancer paitents.

Yoshihuki Takahashi, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Nagoya University School of Medicine.  Dr. Takahashi Dr. was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Childs from 2001-2005. Jordan

Feras Hawari, M.B.B.S., Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, and King Hussein Cancer Center, University of Jordan.  Dr. Hawari was a Clinical Fellow in the Pulmonary and Clinical Care Medicine Branch under the supervision of Dr. Stewart Levine from 2000-2004.  His research concerned how the shedding of TNF receptors affects signal transduction.

Korea

Hyoung-Pyo Kim, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Medical Biology, Yonsei University College of Medicine.  Dr.Kim was a Research Fellow in the the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Warren Leonard from 1998-2008.  His research concerned interleukin receptor signaling. 

Tae-Young Roh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Division of Molecular and Life Sciences, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH).  Dr. Roh was a Research Fellow in the the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Keji Zhao from 2002-2008.  His research concerned genome-wide assessment of chromatin modifications. 

Taiwan

Shpu-Lin  Chang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, National Tsing Hua University, HsinChu.  Dr. Chang  was a Visiting Fellow in the the Laboratory of Biophysical Chemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Nico Tjandra from 2001-2005.  His research concerned structural dynamics of proteins using NMR techniques.

Thailand

Panapat Uawithya, M.D., Ph.D.,  Instructor, Department of Physiology, Mahidol University, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok.  Dr. Padilla was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the supervision of Dr. Mark Knepper rom 2006-2008.  His research involved understanding ion transport mechanisms in the kidney. 

The Phillipines

Philip Padilla, M.D., Ph.D.,  Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miag-ao.  Dr. Padilla was a Visiting Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch under the supervision of Dr. Martha Vaughan from 2001-2005.  His research involved signal transduction pathways involved in vesicular trafficking.  He was a member of the NHLBI DIR Fellows Advisory Committee.

Jonathan Hill, M.B. Katayoun Rezvani, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Senior Lecturer, Imperial College School of Medicine/Hammersmith Hospital, London.  Dr. Rezvani was a Clinical Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. John Barrett from 2001-2007.  Her research concerned the immune responses to stem cell transplantation.  She was a recipient of a Lenfant Fellowship at NHLBI.   Link to her publications at NHLBI.

Denise Crooks, Ph.D., Technology Transfer Specialist, NHLBI Office of the Director.  Dr. Crooks was a fellow in the Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine Branch under Dr. Joel Moss from 2000-2005, where her research concerned the molecular and genetic analysis of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis.  She was a member of the NHLBI DIR Fellows Advisory Committee.

Richard Francis, Ph.D., Staff Scientist, Laboratory of Develoomental Biology, NHLBI.  Dr. Kim was a Visiting Fellow in the  Laboratory of Develoomental Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Cecilia Lo  from 2003-2008.  His work concerned using genetic approaches to understand cardiac development.

Charles Joyce, Ph.D., Scientific Review Administrator, Review Branch, NHLBI.  Dr. Joyce was a Fellow in the Molecular Diseases Branch under the mentorship of Drs. Silvia Fojo and Bryan Brewer, where his esearch focused on the role of the ABC1 cholesterol transporter in cardiovascular disease.  He was also a participant in the Fellows Rotation in Extramural Research, which provides an opportunity for NHLBI fellows to take time from their experiments to learn about extramural research administration.

Ryan Morris, Ph.D., CSR Review Intern, Center For Scientific Review, NIH.  Dr. Morris was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism un the mentorship of Dr. Mark Knepper from 2002-2006 where his research focused on novel kinases in renal function. Dr. Morris was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Kazuo Takeda, M.D., Ph.D., Staff Scientist, Laboratory of Viral Diseases, NIAID.  Dr. Takeda was a Fellow in the Pathology Section and Laboratory of Molecular Cardiology under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Adelstein from 1998-2005.  Her work concerned the pathophysiology of cardiac defects in myosin knockout mice. 

Roberto Weigert, Ph.D., Tenure Track Investigator, National Institute of Dental and Cranionfacial Research, NIH.  Dr. Weigert was a Research Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Julie Donaldson from 2001-2006.  His research concerned trafficking of cellular organelles. 

Kevin Welch, Ph.D., Research Toxicologist, Poisonous Plant Research Laboratory, Agricultural Research Service, US Department of Agriculture, Logan, UT.  Dr. Welch was an IRTA Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Lance Pohl from 2002-2005.  His research concerned proteomic identification of potential susceptibility factors in drug-induced liver disease.  Dr. Welch was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee. 

Steven Yee, Ph.D., Toxicologist, Center for Aerobiological Sciences, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease, Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD.  Dr.Yee  was an IRTA Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Lance Pohl from 2003-2008.  His research concerned protective strategies for drug-induced liver disease.  Dr. Yee was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Georgios Amexis, Ph.D., Regulatory Manager, Oncology, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.  Dr. Amexis was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Neil Young from 2003-2007.  His research concerned the development of novel peptide antigens for vaccine development.

Fraser Brown, Ph.D., Patent Agent, Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, P.C., Washington, D.C..  Dr. Browh was a fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Julie Donaldson from 2000-2005, where his research concerned protein trafficking.  He was a member of the NHLBI Fellows Advisory Committee where he became interested in Patent Law. 

Chiara Buono-Dalton, M.D., Cardiovascular Senior Scientist, VisEn Medical, Woburn, MA.  Dr. Buono was a Fellow in the Cardiology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Howard Kruth from 2004-2007.  Her research focused on mechanisms of cholesterol transport in macrophages.

Ye Che, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Exploratory Medical Sciences, Pfizer, Groton, CT.  Dr. Che was a  Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2003-2008.  His research was on molecular modeling.  He received a FARE award  from NIH. 

Martin Crook, Ph.D., Senior Research Biochemist, Merck Research Laboratories, Rahway, NJ.  Dr. Crook was a fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth Nabel from 2001-2005, where his research focused on the role of cell cycle signaling in atherosclerotic cell proliferation.  He was a member of the NHLBI DIR Fellows Advisory Committee.

Lara Campbell, Ph.D. Senior Program Associate, Research Competitiveness Program, AAAS, Washington DC.  Dr. Campbell was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Thressa Stadtman from 2001-2003, where her research focused on the effects of HIV infection on cellular redox reactions.  She was an active member of the Fellows Advisory Committee

Takumi Matsumoto, Ph.D., Researcher, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Company, Tokyo, Japan.  Dr. Matsumoto was a fellow in the Translational Medicine Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Huang from 2006-2008.  His research concerned the interaction of p53 with oxidative stress.

Niveen Mulholland, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Midwest Research Institute, Rockville, MD.  Dr. Mulholland was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Keji Zhao from 2003-2006.  Her research focused on the role of chromatin remodeling in the control of gene transcription. 

Emily Rothstein, Ph.D., Research Scientist, Eli Lilly and Co., Indianapolis, IN.  Dr. Rothstein was an IRTA fellow in the the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Balaban from 2003-2006.  Her research concerned in vivo imaging of cardiac energetics.  Dr. Rothstein was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Brigitte Simons, Ph.D., Product Application Lab Scientist, MDS Analytical Technologies, Toronto.  Dr. Simons was a Visiting  fellow in the the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism  under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Knepper from 2005-2007.  Her research concerned proteomic approaches to kidney function.  Dr. Rothstein was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Rachael Strong, Ph.D., Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Technical Resources International, Bethesda, MD. Dr. Strong was a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Biophysical Chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Henry Fales from 2005 to 2006.  Her research concerned mass spectrometric analysis of protein structure.  She was also a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Alexandre Vignaud, Ph.D., Technical Specialist, Siemens Medical Systems, Paris, France.  Dr. Vignaud was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Engergetics under the mentorship of Dr. Han Wen from 2003-2005.  His research concerned the development of novel MR imaging techniques for myocardium.

Matt Wolfe, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Schafer Corporation, Arlington, VA..  Dr. Wolfe was an IRTA fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Thressa Stadtman from 2001-2005.  His research concerned the enzymology of selenosphosphate synthetase.  Dr.Wolfe received a  Lenfant Fellowship. Link to his publications at NHLBI.

H. Daniel Zang, Ph.D., Scientific Advisor, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Washington, DC.  Dr. Zang was a Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Developmental Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Yosuke Mukoyama from 2006-2008.  He was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee. 

Rong Zeng, Ph.D., Investigator, Mediummune, Gaithersburg, MD.  Dr. Zeng was a Research Fellow in the the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr, Warren Leonard from 2002-2008.  His research concerned Interleukin 21.
