NCI announces a course for Cancer Scientific Writing (CSW)

Course evaluation now available

Overview:
Scientists must communicate their results to be successful. Because of this, the importance of scientific writing skills can not be minimized. The Cancer Scientific

Writing Training course will be held on May 10, 2005:

  • at NCI-Frederick (Bldg. 549, Executive Board Room) from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and
  • at Bethesda (Bldg. 37/Rooms 6041/6107) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • The purpose of the course is to increase a scientist’s and physician’s ability to successfully communicate scientific ideas in scientific/medical journal articles. The course initially focuses on writing clear sentences and how to use the title, abstract and introduction sections to draw in target audiences. It will be emphasized how to write a well organized, focused discussion section to make your point and how to place your research in the context of the existing scientific literature.

    In addition, a tutorial will be held on May 12, 2005:
  • at NCI-Frederick (Bldg. 549, Executive Board Room) from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and

  • at Bethesda (Bldg. 31, Rm. 4A52) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Registrants can meet in a tutorial section and present scientific articles to Carol Winkelman, a writing consultant, for evaluation and follow-up.

    Location and Time:
    The CSW lecture will be held on the NCI-Frederick campus, Bldg. 549, Executive Board Room on May 10, 2005 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. The lecture will be repeated in Bethesda campus on Tuesday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. on May 10, 2005 in Bldg. 37, Rms. 6041-6107. A handout for each lecture will be distributed on site. A CSW tutorial will be held
    at the NCI-Frederick campus, Bldg. 549, Executive Board Room on May 12, 2005 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. The tutorial will be held at the Bethesda campus on Thursday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. on May 12, 2005 in Bldg. 31, Rm. 4A52.

    Registration:

    Certificate:
    There is no fee for this course. Participants, who register for the course, may receive a certificate of completion after signing in and attending the lecture as well as tutorial.

    Links and Related Training Opportunities:
    This course is part of a developing curriculum for training NCI clinical and postdoctoral fellows. A course in Translational Research in Clinical Oncology (TRACO) is offered in the Fall on Monday afternoons. It focuses on the development new cancer therapies. TRACO complements other topics in human diseases and therapies covered in “Demystifying Medicine for PhDs” which occurs on Tuesday afternoons in the Spring. In February a 2 day course is offered on Statistical Analysis of Research Data (SARD) is offered for NCI Clinical and Postdoctoral fellows.     CSW Faculty:
    Carol Winkelman, M.A. in English and American Literature, has taught Scientific and Grant Writing Courses at numerous Universities, including Duke Univ., Univ. Cincinnati and Univ. Pennsylvania. She has also written numerous articles on health and travel for publications such as the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Southern Exposure and The Cincinnati Enquirer.
