Nurse Practitioner and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Recruitment Information

Positions Affected

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and/or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are involved in patient care activities within the Clinical Center.

Background Information

Nurse Practioners and CRNAs hired by NIH ICs have frequently encountered difficulties in obtaining nursing privileges to practice in the Clinical Center. Often the candidate does not meet the State of Maryland requirements to practice as a NP or CRNA, even though he/she meets Federal qualification requirements for the position. This has caused significant delays in privileging the candidate thus adversely impacting clinical research protocols conducted in the Clinical Center.

To eliminate potential delays in the privileging of NPs and CRNAs, the Office of Human Resources Management, the Nursing Department and Medical Records Department, Credentialing Services Section of the Clinical Center, have issued the following recruitment guidelines as a supplement to Nursing Department policy and procedures for privileging nurses (NIH Clinical Nursing Department Policy on Privileging Nurses or NIH Clinical Nursing Department Policy on Interim Privileging Nurses.)

Selective Factors for Vacancy Announcements

The following selective factors are strongly suggested for vacancy announcements for Nurse Practitioner and CRNA positions to insure that requirements for both the Maryland Board of Nursing certification and Clinical Center nursing privileges can be granted on a timely basis:

Nurse Practitioner

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

Applicants for CRNA positions must be licensed as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at the time of appointment to the position.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Nursing Department Privileging Coordinator at (301) 496-5550. Medical Staff credentialing questions may be director to the coordinator at (301) 496-5937.
