Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)

Description

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is a family of health care databases and related software tools and products developed through a Federal-State-Industry partnership and sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). HCUP databases bring together the data collection efforts of State data organizations, hospital associations, private data organizations, and the Federal government to create a national information resource of patient-level health care data. HCUP databases provide data beginning in 1988. The databases include the Nationwide Inpatient sample (NIS), the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID), the State Inpatient Databases (SID), the State Ambulatory Surgery Databases (SASD), and the State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD). The databases contain information on diagnoses, patient demographics, and inpatient procedures and mortality.

Access to some national and state-level HCUP statistics (including but not limited to diagnoses and procedure rates, lengths of stay, total charges, and trends over time) is free of charge; other information is available for a fee.
