Nancy Breen
Nancy Breen, PhD, Economist, trained at the New School for Social Research in New
York City. Since 1991 she has conducted research at the National Cancer Institute, where
she currently coordinates health disparities research for the Health Services and
Economics Branch of the Applied Research Program. Her research focuses on how social
inequalities are related to health disparities, with special emphasis on cancer, especially
cancer screening. The ARP mission is to improve cancer monitoring systems in the US by
extending them across the cancer control continuum in order to understand the distribution
of cancer-related hazards and health services in the US population. Dr. Breen's areas of
responsibility include investigating how race, social class, gender, community factors,
and health service diffusion shape cancer control and cancer outcomes. Of particular
interest to Dr. Breen is how economic indicators can be used to improve cancer monitoring,
how SES indicators can be routinely monitored, and increasing evaluation of public
programs. She coordinates the Cancer Control Supplements to the 2000 National Health
Interview Survey (NHIS) and the 2000 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). She has
co-authored over 40 articles.
