Several interesting questions were asked at the November and December NIH Library classes on EndNote:
Q: How do I include URLs when downloading citations from PubMed®?
A: Search PubMed from within EndNote. Follow these steps:
- Open EndNote.
- Go to the "Tools" menu, select "Connect," and then select "PubMed (NLM)."
- Conduct your search. Retrieve the references.
- "Copy All References To" your EndNote library. See the URL field for each record (for example, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&dopt=Citation&list_uids=17569282). Note that the URLs link to the PubMed record for each article, not to the full text.
Q: I would like to share the references in my EndNote library with a colleague. Is it possible to email an EndNote library?
A: Yes, as long as your colleague also has EndNote. For EndNote X and EndNote X1, the recommended approach is to save your complete library (the .enl file as well as the associated .Data folder and all of its contents) to a single compressed .enlx file. Follow these steps:
- Open the library in EndNote.
- From the "File" menu, select "Send to," and then select "Compressed Library."
- Save to an EndNote Compressed Library (filename.enlx).
To restore a compressed library file:
- Use EndNote X or EndNote X1 to open the .enlx file. EndNote will extract the .enl file and the .Data folder to the same folder where the .enlx file is located.
- Use EndNote to open the .enl file and access the library.
Note that EndNote libraries larger than 4 gigabytes (GB) or 65,535 files (64 K) cannot be compressed with the "Send to>Compressed Library" command.
Q: I created a bibliography in my manuscript using the Cite While You Write feature. Every time I edit a citation in the bibliography, the changes disappear. How do I save the changes?
A: Edit the citations in your EndNote library and then reformat the bibliography.
Q: What are field codes and why must I remove them before sending my manuscript to the publisher?
A: Field codes are instructions that enable EndNote to format citations in Microsoft Word. Publishers request that they be removed because the codes may interfere with processing the manuscript text. To remove field codes from a manuscript created in Word:
- Make a backup copy of your manuscript.
- Open the manuscript.
- Go to the "Tools" menu, select "EndNote," then select "Remove Field Codes." EndNote creates a copy of the manuscript without field codes, which appears in a new window.
- Save the copy.
