The Bethesda Chapter of AWIS was formed in 1991 and has grown to over 150 members. Its members are actively engaged in scientific research, education, administration and policy activities, and are employed in federal agencies, academia, business, and non-profit organizations. The Chapter offers many activities and benefits to its members.

Members receive announcements of the yearly seminar series - "Strategies for Success in Science" which features:

  • speakers who provide their personal insight and experience on topics such as: starting your own biotechnology company, how to negotiate an academic job offer, and family and career issues.
  • a seminar for an outstanding woman scientist who has been named by the National Institutes of Health as the annual Pittman Lecturer, in honor of Dr. Margaret Pittman, the first woman laboratory chief at the NIH.
a reception, prior to each seminar, that affords attendees an opportunity to socialize and network with the speakers, members of the board, and each other.
  • Via the Chapter Listserv, all members receive email notices of: job announcements, meetings, websites, etc. of interest, funding opportunities, mentoring and networking activities, details of our seminar meetings (seminar announcements also are mailed to members prior to each meeting)
  • Members have the opportunity to: suggest nominees for the Chapter's annual mentoring award, serve on the Board, nominate candidates to serve as officers of the Board.
