Portfields Overview
Portfields is a NOAA led federal interagency effort that focuses on the redevelopment of brownfields in port and harbor areas, with emphasis on development of environmentally sound port facilities. NOAA and its federal partners will assist the designated Portfields pilot ports revitalize waterfront areas, improve marine transportation, and protect and restore coastal habitat.
Federal Commitments
Each federal partner participating in Portfields brings its own specialized expertise and strong commitment to the overall goal of revitalizing port communities.
Southern Louisiana Regional Portfields Initiative
Building on the successes of Portfields pilots, NOAA and EPA are working together to bring the Portfields model to Southern Louisiana. On May 23-24, 2006, representatives from nine ports in Louisiana met in New Orleans, LA to kick off the Southern Louisiana Regional Portfields Initiative.

Pilot Ports
The Portfields federal agencies selected three pilot ports and will provide targeted resources to assist and expedite the planning and implementation of brownfields cleanup and reuse. The pilots were chosen for their willingness to participate, unique set of needs, commitment to port redevelopment, innovative approaches to waterfront planning and revitalization, and overall value federal assistance would add to the redevelopment effort.
