Brand Name: Intelence
Drug Class: Non-nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors

Etravirine, also known as Intelence or TMC125, is a type of medicine called a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). NNRTIs work by blocking reverse transcriptase, a protein that HIV needs to make more copies of itself.

HIV/AIDS-Related Uses

Etravirine was approved by the FDA on January 18, 2008, for use with other antiretroviral agents in the treatment of HIV infection in treatment-experienced adults. This medication does not cure HIV infection or AIDS and does not reduce the risk of passing the virus to other people.

Dosage Form/Administration

Etravirine comes in tablet form and is taken by mouth. Etravirine should be taken with food.

Recommended Daily Dose

The recommended dose of etravirine for adults is 200 mg (two 100 mg tablets) twice daily following a meal. Some patients may benefit from different doses of etravirine. Patients should always take etravirine as prescribed by their doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Along with its desired effects, etravirine may cause some unwanted effects. Serious side effects of this medication include severe skin rash. Individuals should tell a doctor if they experience a severe skin rash when taking etravirine.

Other side effects may not be serious and may lessen or disappear with continued use of this medicine. Mild to moderate rash has been reported in some individuals taking etravirine. This rash occurs in the second week of therapy and generally resolves within 1-2 weeks of continued therapy.

Many people who take etravirine report nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, peripheral neuropathy, headache, and high blood pressure. Individuals should tell a doctor if these side effects continue or are bothersome.
