AIDSinfo At-a-Glance Issue No. 45December 22, 2005 AIDSinfo.nih.gov is pleased to provide you with a weekly update of highlights about what has happened in the world of HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research. We hope you find this encapsulated view of HIV/AIDS news useful. False-Positive HIV Tests Reported with Oral Fluid TestingUsing oral fluids or whole blood, the OraQuick® Advance Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test can provide HIV test results in as little as 20 minutes. However, HIV testing programs have reported false-positive test results when the test was used with oral fluids (click here for more on the story). A false-positive result means that an individual’s test came out positive for HIV when, in fact, the individual was not actually infected with the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with the Food and Drug Administration, state and local health officials, and the OraQuick® test’s manufacturer (OraSure Technologies) to decide if standard testing protocols should be changed due to the reports of false-positive rapid test results on oral fluids. In the meantime, HIV counselors should continue to follow the current testing guidelines, which call for a second HIV test (western blot or immunofluorescent assay) to confirm an initial positive rapid HIV test. The protocol for confirmation testing can be found here .
