Working Group on Allignment of Funding Mechanisms and Scientific Opportunity

Description:
Excellence in the science and engineering enterprise requires a talented and motivated workforce that must be continually replenished. Adequate support is necessary to attract and train the best young minds from the U.S. as well as the rest of the world. Consistency of support and the adequacy of that support at the training levels are crucial in developing the workforce for the research enterprise. The quality of the preparation and training of graduate students and postdoctoral scientists for their career paths is paramount. In addition, collaboration across agencies is needed to maximize the collective federal impact in these areas.

Scope and Key Results:
Develop a set of recommendations to increase collective federal impact in providing attractive, consistent, and adequate compensation packages for graduate students and postdoctoral scientists, as well as improving the quality of their training. The working group will build on the numerous reports that have been written on compensation and quality of training for graduate students and postdoctoral scientists.
