NIH-DFG Research Career Transition Award Reception (May 24, 2005)

Dr. Michael Gottesman, NIH Deputy Director of Intramural Research, and Dr. Reinhard Grunwald, Secretary-General of the German Research Foundation (DFG), formally signed the Letter of Intent to inaugurate the “NIH-DFG Research Career Transition Award Program” (http://fellowshipoffice.niddk.nih.gov/NIH-DFG/).

The goal of this Program is the promotion of excellence in the research training, professional growth, and career development of German Postdoctoral Fellows as they transition to independent researchers and faculty members at academic institutions. The Program is intended to assist Postdoctoral Fellows in Germany who would like to broaden their scientific experience in the basic or clinical sciences through research training in the laboratories and medical facilities of the NIH. These Fellows would then return to Germany and assume temporary faculty positions at universities and research institutes in that country.

Postbac Poster Day (May 5, 2005)

During this annual Office of Intramural Training and Education-sponsored event, Fellows from across the campus share the results of their research in progress with the NIH community. This gives the Postbacs an opportunity to speak with other NIH scientists and meet with Fellows from other Institutes. Postbacs are recent college graduates with a strong interest in biomedical research who are selected to spend a year or two in training at the NIH. The great majority enter medical school, graduate school, or some other professional degree-granting program after leaving the NIH.

2nd Annual NIDDK Fellows Scientific Retreat (May 2-3, 2005)

This two-day research and career development-oriented meeting provided an opportunity for our Postdoctoral, Clinical, and Predoctoral Fellows to share their research findings with other young scientists at our Institute http://fellowshipoffice.niddk.nih.gov/retreat/. The Retreat was held off-site at the Coolfont Resort and Conference Center in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia in a relaxing, alpine setting.

The goal was to promote a cross-fertilization of ideas, develop new research collaborations, exchange technical knowledge, and foster a sense of community among the Fellows. There were several sessions of oral and poster presentations and one session devoted to career development --- a panel discussion by recent NIDDK Postdoctoral Alumni who shared their experiences about life in their new job settings. The event was attended by nearly 200 Fellows.
