Career Seminar Series

What is the Career Seminar Series?

The Career Series is a monthly event that is co-sponsored by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and that is open to all of our Fellows. The topics are geared toward meeting the professional needs and career interests of our Postdocs and Clinical Fellows.

The Seminar times are announced on the email flyer that is sent out to the fellows, beginning of each month. Each month, a speaker is invited by the joint Postdoc Career Development Committee of the two Institutes to address the Fellows on a particular subject. With the variety of topics selected, Fellows are exposed to a wide spectrum of future job opportunities and areas of employment.

The speakers not only provide information on career choices, marketing skills, and interviewing techniques, but they also place great emphasis on the influence of their own personal life experiences.

  • How did they go about finding their current job?
  • What do they do on a day-to-day basis?
  • Did their Postdoc training adequately prepare them for job searches in the marketplace?
  • What are the pros and cons of their present position and place of work?

Attendance at these seminars can be viewed as a positive and innovative approach that allows speakers and fellows to network. It also provides Fellows with opportunities to expand their range of contacts with people outside the NIH who can help them improve their scientific prospects after they leave the NIH. At these sessions the Fellows are able to interact informally with the speakers and address any concerns, questions and thoughts they may have. Thus, this Career Seminar Series has been very successful in fulfilling its purpose of helping Fellows explore potential job opportunities and select the best possible career path.
