Since Visiting Fellows are not employees, they do not earn leave. They are, however, excused on Federal holidays and sponsors shall excuse Visiting Fellows for reasonable cause, such as ill health and maternity reasons.
Sponsors should make their views on excused absences known to each program participant before he/she is awarded a Visiting Fellowship.
Sponsors should grant excused absence for a reasonable period of time annually, for example, two weeks to allow for cultural exchange and relaxation.
Such excused absence, however, cannot be permitted during the last two weeks of the award period. Neither the duration of the award period nor the original termination date of the fellowship can be extended because of lost time.
Stipends and health insurance will continue only through excused leaves of absence.
