About the Research Group

Mission

The Basic Prevention Science Research Group is responsible for developing and implementing a program of molecular prevention of cancer by integrating fundamental research of NCI intramural and extramural research divisions with that of the Division of Cancer Prevention. Attention will be given to molecular genetics and the molecular pathogenesis of precancer and the application of these approaches to clinical trials in cancer prevention.

This Research Group will:

• provide leadership to assist the prevention research community to take full advantage of NCI research, training, and education grant opportunities;
• coordinate and run workshops and support publications aimed at building up the infrastructure for basic prevention science and tie it to clinical research at cancer centers, research universities, medical schools, schools of public health and the cooperative oncology groups through the use of modern communications technologies;
• establish a network of young scientists interested in cancer prevention research;
• foster infectious agent cancer prevention research;
• integrate clinical immunology into the repertoire of prevention research;
• serve as program director for multidisciplinary program project grants and for basic research grants that are linked to DCP clinical trials; and
• provide a focal point for DCP to work with cancer research organizations to promote basic prevention research and its link to clinical cancer prevention studies.
