Post-Doctoral Openings

Investigator:    Ted Usdin
Affiliation:    Laboratory of Genetics, NIMH
Position Type:    Postdoctoral Fellowship
Labs Web Page:    http://neuroscience.nih.gov/Lab.asp?Org_ID=175

Description:

A position is available to work on projects related to elucidation of the biological functions of neuropeptide systems. We recently discovered a new neuropeptide (tuberoinfundibular peptide of 39 residues; TIP39) that appears to be the endogenous ligand for a receptor that we cloned several years ago and originally named the parathyroid hormone 2 (PTH2) receptor. Anatomical mapping of the receptor and peptide suggests a number of potential functions, including modulation of stress, anxiety, pain and pituitary hormone release. Preliminary data strongly support these ideas. Someone joining the laboratory may help test these ideas, or develop and test new hypotheses about the function of this neuropeptide system and/or develop a new related project. Candidates with a variety of backgrounds such as physiology, neuroanatomy, behavior, molecular biology, neurobiology or neuroendocrinology may find this a good opportunity. Resources are available for a large number of techniques including generation of transgenic mice, behavioral analysis, and modern molecular biology, cell biology and neuroanatomy.
