Offices and Research Groups
Research fostered by the Division of Cancer Prevention focuses on prevention of disease, and spans the disease process: early interventions to prevent, stop, or slow the development of cancer; symptom management during treatment; and supportive care at the end-of-life. DCP is headed by the director's offices, and is organized into 11 research groups, each dedicated to defined areas of cancer prevention science.
The Office of the DCP Director, headed by Peter Greenwald, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., upholds the core mission of the division to conduct and support research to improve the health of the public by decreasing the incidence, death, and morbidity of cancer. The office contains the following key components.
The Office of the Associate Director for Clinical Research, headed by Leslie Ford, M.D., oversees and coordinates all aspects of clinical research within DCP, including the organ-systems phase I/II studies and agent development programs.
The Protocol Information Office, headed by Anne Tompkins, is the centralized repository for clinical study concepts and protocols and related information.
Research Groups
The 11 DCP branches, or research groups, concentrate on the following aspects of cancer prevention.
The Organ Systems research groups design, develop, implement, and monitor the breadth of cancer prevention research efforts in four major organ sites:
Basic Science
In collaboration with non-DCP programs dedicated to systems biology research, this group is developing systems approaches to cancer prevention in areas such as drug development and carcinogenesis modeling.
Biometry
This group provides key consultations to NCI program managers and scientific decision-makers based on independent and cooperative studies using statistical analysis of biological data and mathematical and computer models.
Cancer Biomarkers
This group promotes and supports research to identify, develop, and validate biological markers for earlier cancer detection and risk assessment.
Chemopreventive Agent Development
This group supports scientific and administrative oversight for preclinical chemoprevention agent development up to early phase I chemopreventive agent research using physiological endpoints in healthy volunteers.
Community Oncology and Prevention Trials
This group develops programs to improve clinical oncology in community settings and coordinates program activities with other NCI efforts.
Early Detection
This group identifies and ascertains the effectiveness of both the operating characteristics and the impacts on mortality, and immediate and downstream risks of molecular and imaging cancer detection technologies and practices.
Nutritional Science
This group plans, develops, directs, and coordinates external, contract and grant funded research programs in diet and nutrition, including micronutrients as modifiers of cancer risk and tumor behavior.
