About the Project
Rationale: Communication among researchers and practitioners is increasingly being conducted on intranet and internet sites. Networks and collaborations have used these methods to communicate with their membership and provide information and resources to others on important topics.
Purpose: To help facilitate TReND’s mission and the collaborative work of the network’s many investigators, faculty and staff from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Center for Community-Based Research (DFCI) and the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center’s Health Communication Core (HCC) developed the TReND intranet website. The website includes several interactive features that facilitate communication and documentation of TReND’s activities including (1) a project calendar for tracking network conference calls and meeting dates; (2) the ability to upload and make relevant documents available for the entire network and individual projects; (3) a discussion board where members can post comments and generate dialogue on a given topic or upcoming event; and (4) a resource page linking members to valuable research tools, funding opportunities, and other organizations and references related to tobacco and health disparities.
In addition to the TReND intranet, the project team is working on the development and launch of a publicly available website, which will help to serve as a legacy for the efforts of TReND’s working groups and projects. The specific goals are to develop a public website that will:
- Inform and frame the scientific issues around tobacco-related health disparities so that individuals who are interested can better understand how to approach it.
- Encourage the translation of research into program and policy action.
The ultimate aim is to create a site that offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date information for those interested in tobacco disparities. Targeted audiences for the public website include researchers, the medical community, government and non-government organizations (NGOs), and community groups working in the field of tobacco control and/or health disparities (as well as parallel groups internationally). The TReND Tobacco-Related Health Disparities public website is now available: http://www.tobaccodisparities.org.
Impact: With increasing focus on the need for collaborative and multi-disciplinary efforts to address complex and critical public health issues, we hope the efforts of this Intranet and Public Website project will: (1) serve as a model for future similar networks of collaborating individuals and organizations, using current and emerging technologies to facilitate communication and collaboration between users from different locations throughout the country, and (2) provide a vast resource center for individuals seeking information about tobacco-related health disparities.
