Standardized Surveys of Walking & Bicycling Database
This database contains survey questions and a list of validation studies for
standardized survey questions concerning walking and biking from multiple national and
international physical activity surveys and questionnaires (PAQs). The purpose of this
database is to provide easy access to a large number of questions assessing duration and
frequency of walking and bicycling in the non-disabled adult population. We also briefly
review the results of validation studies identified for some of the PAQs.
- A total of 71 PAQs were identified from large surveys, government surveys or
epidemiological studies. They included walking and biking questions from published and
printed PAQs or PAQs from agency Web sites.
- A total of 35 validation studies, related to these PAQs, were compiled with
information on author, date of survey, methods, sampling, and summary results.
Summary of the Methods
Relevant surveys were identified through a combination of PubMed
searches for keywords,
snowball techniques, and consultation with experts to identify relevant surveys by name.
We then used a combination of bibliographic tools and author contacts to find validation
studies. This compilation is not based on a formal meta-analytic review; it is intended
to be a robust sample of major instruments.
