H.R. 741—The Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention

On January 31, 2007, Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced H.R. 741, the Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act of 2007. Provisions would require the Secretary, HHS, through the Directors of the CDC, NIH, and AHRQ, and the Commissioner of FDA, as well as additional Federal agencies as deemed appropriate, to provide for coordination of all Federal programs and activities related to Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Authorized to carry out these provisions and for the purpose of providing for additional research, prevention, and education would be $20,000,000 for each of the Fiscal Years 2008 through 2012; these funds would be in addition to any other authorization of appropriations for relevant activities. Provisions would also require the Secretary to establish within the Office of the Secretary a Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee. H.R. 741 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and has thirteen cosponsors.
