H.R. 1727 The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act
On March 28, 2007, Representative Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) introduced H.R. 1727, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act. The companion measure, S. 1183, was introduced by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), on the March 23 and reported from the Senate HELP Committee on August 3. H.R. 1727 would authorize NIH, acting through NINDS, to expand and coordinate NIH activities on paralysis research; award grants to plan, establish, improve, and provide basic operating support for Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Research Consortia; acting through NICHD and the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research, expand and coordinate NIH research with implications for enhancing daily function for persons with paralysis; and provide basic operating support for multicenter clinical trial networks to design clinical rehabilitation intervention protocols and measures of outcomes on paralysis. H.R. 446 and S. 1183 are related measures. H.R. 1727 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
