H.R. 1157—The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act of 2007

On February 16, 2007, Representative Nita Lowey (D-NY) introduced H.R. 1157, the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act of 2007. The Senate companion, S. 579, was introduecd by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) on February 14. The legislation would establish a grant program for the development and operation of Centers of Excellence to study the potential environmental factors related to the etiology of breast cancer. The bills would also create, within the NIH, a Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Panel to develop a comprehensive strategy concerning the collaborative Centers. The authorization level for these grants would be $40 million over 5 years. H.R. 1157 was referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

September 23, 2008 – The House Committee on Energy and Commerce marked up and reported H.R. 1157, with an amendment in the nature of a substitute

FLOOR ACTION

September 25, 2008 – The House voted to suspend the rules and pass H.R. 1157

September 27, 2008 – The Senate passed H.R. 1157 by unanimous consent

PRESIDENTIAL ACTION

October 8, 2008 - The President signed H.R. 1157 into law as P.L. 110-354.
