S. 2278—The Community and Healthcare-Associated Infections Reduction Act of 2007

On October 31, 2007, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) introduced S. 2278, the Community and Healthcare-Associated Infections Reduction Act of 2007. Provisions would authorize the Director, NIH, in coordination with the directors of the national research institutes, to expand and intensify programs of the agency concerning community and healthcare-associated infections (CHAI). The Director may coordinate with other Federal officials, voluntary health associations, medical professional societies, and private entities, as appropriate; and award planning grants or contracts for innovative CHAI research. Within six months of the date of enactment, the Secretary of HHS, in collaboration with the Directors of the CDC and NIH and the Administrator of FDA, would be required to submit a report to Congress detailing obstacles to anti-infective, especially antibacterial, drug research and development. S. 2278 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).
