S. 1858—The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007

On July 23, 2007, Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT) introduced S. 1858, the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007. The bill is aimed at creating more uniformity among the states regarding the availability of newborn screening tests. S. 1858 would provide (1) grants to be made by HRSA to increase education and training regarding the availability of newborn screening tests, (2) grants to be made by CDC to enhance surveillance programs for heritable disorders screening, and (3) grants to be made by NIH to establish multi-site newborn screening translational research networks to develop new screening technologies. S. 1858 was referred to the Senate HELP Committee and has three cosponsors.

COMMITTEE/SUBCOMMITTEE ACTION

November 14, 2007 - The Senate HELP Committee amended and ordered reported S. 1858 by voice vote.

FLOOR ACTION

December 13, 2007 - The Senate passed S. 1858 under unanimous consent.

On April 8, 2008 - The House passed S. 1858 under suspension of the rules.

PRESIDENTIAL ACTION

April 24, 2008 -  The President signed S. 1858 into law as P.L. 110-204.
