H.R.1262—The Ronald Reagan Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of 2005

On March 10, 2005, Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced H.R. 1262, the Ronald Reagan Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of 2005. The bill would double funding for biomedical research on Alzheimer’s disease at NIH, the National Caregiver Support Program, and the Alzheimer’s Demonstration Grant Program. It also would call on the NIH Director to work with the CDC, and stakeholders, to develop an Alzheimer’s Disease Prevention Initiative. CDC would have to create an education program, “News You Can Use,” to spread the word about advances in research. A companion measure, S. 602, was introduced by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). H.R. 1262 was referred to the House Committees on Energy and Commerce, and on Education and the Workforce.
