Small Grants Program
For Behavioral Research in Cancer Control

About the Small Grants Program

Small Grants Program for Behavioral Research in Cancer Control
The Small Grants Program for Behavioral Research in Cancer Control is designed to fund pilot projects by investigators new to behavioral cancer control research. The goal is to support and foster the professional development of new behavioral scientists by helping them acquire additional skills and data to apply for other grants.

In addition to new investigators, experienced researchers from a variety of academic, scientific, and public health disciplines are encouraged to apply their skills to behavioral research studies in cancer prevention and control.

Small Grants, also known as R03 awards, are short-term awards to provide support for:

  • Pilot projects
  • Development and testing of new methodologies
  • Secondary data analyses
  • Innovative projects that provide a basis for more extended research
  • Thesis or dissertation research
  • Feasibility studies
  • Secondary data analyses

Application Characteristics

  • Applicants for an R03 award may request a project period of up to three years and a budget for direct costs that does not exceed $100,000 for the entire project period.
  • Small grant support is for new projects only; competing continuation applications will not be accepted.
  • Two revisions of a previously reviewed R03 small grant application will be accepted. (See NOT-OD-05-046)
  • The Research Plan (Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Preliminary Studies, and Research Design and Methods) of an application for a small grant may not exceed a total of 10 pages.
  • A Progress Report is required; competing continuation applications for a small grant will be not accepted.

The program is funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) small research grant mechanism (R03).

The full text of the program announcement is available on the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-06-458.html (This Program Announcement (PAR) replaces PAR-04-020.)

Potential applicants may also wish to contact their institutional Office of Sponsored Programs for application forms and information.
