SEER-Medicare: Institutional Review Board Approval
Most investigators requesting the SEER-Medicare data will have
obtained approval from their organization's Institutional Review Board (IRB)
prior to receiving the data. For the minority of researchers requesting the
SEER-Medicare data who have not obtained IRB approval, NCI does not require
such approval as the SEER-Medicare data have been stripped of all personal
identifiers. Concerns and regulations related to patient privacy using
secondary data are changing with some frequency and NCI's requirements about
IRB review prior to obtaining the SEER-Medicare data may be subject to
change without notice. However, NCI will update this website to keep
investigators informed of any changes that do occur that alter the process
for obtaining SEER-Medicare data.
