S. 859—Microbicides Development Act of 2003

On April 10, 2003, Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ) introduced S. 859, the Microbicides Development Act of 2003. Provisions would require the NIH Office of AIDS Research to 1) expedite the development and implementation of a Federal microbicide research strategic plan; 2) expand, intensify and coordinate the relevant activities of appropriate NIH research components; and 3) prepare and submit, within one year of enactment and biannually thereafter, a report to Congress on Federal microbicide research implementation strategies. S. 859 also would require the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectius Diseases to establish a microbicide development branch within the Vaccine and Prevention Research Program of its Division of AIDS. S. 859 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
