S. 819—Law Enforcement Officers Retirement Equity Act

On April 8, 2003, Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) introduced S. 819, the Law Enforcement Officers Retirement Equity Act. NIH police officers whose duties include 1) the investigation of crimes, 2) the apprehension and detention of persons suspected or convicted of crimes, and 3) are qualified to carry a firearm could be officially designated as "Law Enforcement Officers," thus allowing them to receive enhanced retirement and death benefits as well as increased salary. S. 819 was referred to the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs.
