S. 1833—Healthcare Equality and Accountability Act

On November 6, 2003, Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD) introduced S. 1833, the Healthcare Equality and Accountability Act. S. 1833 would address various efforts to improve the health of minority individuals. Provisions of interest to NIH address 1) expansion of support for uterine fibroid research; 2) surveillance and screening for fetal alcohol syndrome; 3) reduction of infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, and cancer; and 4) improved efforts to prevent and treat stroke and diabetes. Several other health topics are addressed, as well. S. 1833 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. On November 6, Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) introduced the companion measure, H.R. 3459.
