S. 1726—Prematurity Research Expansion and Education for Mothers who deliver Infants Early Act ("PREEMIE Act")

On October 14, 2003, Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Christopher Dodd (D-CT) introduced S. 1726, the Prematurity Research Expansion and Education for Mothers who deliver Infants Early Act ("PREEMIE Act"). In general, the bill would require NIH to 1) "expand, intensify, and coordinate" research regarding preterm labor and delivery, infant mortality, and treatment of preterm and low birthweight infants; 2) contract (in conjunction with CDC) with the IOM for a study to address the health and economic consequences of preterm birth; and 3) participate in an Interagency Coordinating Council on Prematurity and Low Birthweight. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The companion measure, H.R. 3350, was introduced by Representative Fred Upton (R-MI) on October 20.
