S. 1584—Appropriations for the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development, 2004

On September 5, 2003, Senator Christopher S. Bond (R-MO) introduced S. 1584, a bill making appropriations for the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development for the Fiscal Year (FY) ending September 30, 2004, which includes funding for NIEHS. In the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, NIEHS was authorized to conduct multidisciplinary research and training activities associated with the Nation's Hazardous Substance Superfund program; and in the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorizations Act of 1986, NIEHS was authorized to conduct training and education of workers who are or may be engaged in activities related to hazardous waste removal or containment or emergency response. S. 1584 would provide $78,774,000 for NIEHS, which is the same as the budget request and $4,754,000 below the FY 2003 enacted level. The House bill, H.R.2861, which passed the House on July 25, would provide $80 million to NIEHS.
