Job Description
Physician Assistants at the NIH, have direct patient care responsibilities, meaning they: take and record histories and physical examinations; review and interpret lab and other diagnostic test data; order appropriate treatments, medications and diagnostic studies; and provide patient education. Physician Assistants also respond to inquiries from referring physicians, hospital staff and patients regarding the diagnosis and treatment of conditions as well as eligibility for research protocols. These staff members participate in daily rounds and may present at patient care conferences; explain to patients their rights and obligations as research subjects; act as a resource for patients and patient groups; maintain contact with patients and referring physicians; and provide follow-up care throughout the course of a study.
