H.R. 2085—Access to Medical Treatment Act

On May 20, 2003, Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Dan Burton (R-IN) introduced H.R. 2085, the Access to Medical Treatment Act. The bill would permit an individual to be treated by a health care practitioner with any method of medical treatment that the individual desires, including treatment that is not approved, certified or licensed by the Secretary of HHS. H.R. 2085 includes a provision that would require a practitioner to report positive results of non-approved drugs and medical devices to NCCAM. H.R. 2085 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The companion measure, S. 1410 was introduced by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) on July 15.
