H.R. 1068—Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation Act of 2003

On March 4, 2003, Representative George Nethercutt (R-WA) introduced H.R. 1068, the Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation Act of 2003. H.R. 1068 would increase the supply of pancreatic islet cells, provide better coordination of Federal efforts and information on islet cell transplantation, collect the data necessary to move islet cell transplantation from an experimental procedure to a standard therapy, and provide for a demonstration project on Medicare coverage of pancreatic islet cell transplantation for beneficiaries with type 1 diabetes who have end-stage renal disease. H.R. 1068 was referred to the House Committees on Energy and Commerce and on Ways and Means. On March 5, 2003, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the companion measure, S. 518, which was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
