Overview

The Gastrointestinal and Other Cancers Research Group in the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health is pleased to announce a meeting of the new Barrett’s Esophagus Translational Research (BETR) Working Group. The charge to meeting participants, as members of the multi-disciplinary Working Group, will be to identify and prioritize research opportunities that will translate into improved outcomes for patients diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus. These recommendations for a national Barrett’s esophagus research agenda will be derived from focused discussions that follow presentations of recent epidemiologic, clinical and basic research findings.

This meeting will also serve as a follow-up to the Barrett's Esophagus (BE) Working Group meetings held in 2001 which resulted in the NIDDK/NCI Request for Applications entitled "Barrett's Esophagus, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, and Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus". Reports of selected projects will be presented.

The meeting agenda will include focused sessions on the following areas of research:

  • Clinical risk factors
  • Molecular and histologic biomarkers
  • Emerging diagnostic and early detection techniques
  • Endoscopic therapies
  • Chemoprevention
