S. 3558—The National Hepatitis B Act

On June 22, 2006, Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Diane Feinstein (D-CA) introduced S. 3558, the National Hepatitis B Act. S. 3558 would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services, in consultation with the Directors of NIH, NCI and other Federal health agencies, to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for the prevention, control and medical management of hepatitis B. This plan would include strategies for expanded vaccination programs, primary and secondary preventative education and training, surveillance and early detection, and research. The companion bill, H.R. 4550, was introduced by Representatives Charles Dent (R-PA) and Michael Honda (D-CA) on December 15, 2005. S. 3558 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).
