Dimeric Naphthylisoquinoline Alkaloids And Synthesis Methods Thereof

Description of Invention:
This invention embodies novel compounds, and methods of synthesis thereof, comprising homodimeric and heterodimeric napthylisoquinoline alkaloids and derivatives. The methods presented in the invention are advantageous, for example, because they permit, for the first time, the total synthesis of compounds for which the only known natural sources are tropical plants, such as the rare Ancistrocladus korupensis of Central Africa. This class of compounds is effective in inhibiting the ability of HIV to replicate and infect cells. The compounds also have antimalarial activity. The dimeric alkaloids comprise a novel class of antiviral and antiparasitic drugs that may be very useful by themselves or in combination with other treatments.
