International University Partnerships (International Students)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has formed partnerships with several international universities to bring foreign pre-doctoral graduate students for dissertation research training to NIH laboratories.  Students do research at NIH for a period of 3 months to 3 years depending on the research project and training needs.  The foreign students have completed all course work and Masters-Level examination requirements of their university prior to arrival in the U.S. placing them in an advanced graduate status equivalent to a U.S. Masters degree.  English language proficiency is one of the requirements for participation in the program.

Students are selected by their university or a central committee representing each of the universities in a consortium of universities and are appropriately placed in an NIH laboratory defined by the research content of their dissertation.  The NIH provides the research training of the pre-doctoral students.  The universities provide coursework and academic support including the awarding of doctoral degrees to candidates that have successfully completed the doctoral requirements specified by the university.

Application to these programs requires the following items:

  • Completion of required coursework in a Ph.D. program
  • Letter from department/program chairperson giving permission to perform part or all of the dissertation research at NIH
  • Completion of the GPP application
  • Identification of an NIH Investigator for a host laboratory
  • Application for the appropriate visa for non-US citizens
