What are the financial obligations to train a graduate student in my laboratory?

The three major areas of financial support for PhD graduate students are stipend, health insurance, and tuition.  The specific details about the financial obligations are dependent on the pathway by which the student arrives at NIH.

Institutional Partnership – Prospective PhD Students (US Citizens / US Permanent Residents)
Students receive a stipend, health insurance, and tuition support based on the agreement between NIH and the host University.  The first year of financial support is provided by the GPP while subsequent years are provided by the NIH Investigator hosting the student for dissertation research.

Tuition payments for fall and spring semesters are due during approximately one-month before the start of the semester.  The amount of tuition paid by NIH or the investigator varies by program and the year of the student in the program.  Contact the GPP office for specific details about different partnerships

Institutional Partnership – Current PhD Students (International Students)
Students receive a stipend and health insurance based on the agreement between NIH and the host University or consortium of Universities.  The NIH Investigator hosting the student provides the financial support.  International students are not eligible to receive financial support for tuition.

Individual Partnership – US Citizens / US Permanent Residents
Students may receive a stipend, health insurance, and tuition support based on the negotiated agreement between the NIH investigator and student’s graduate program.  A typical arrangement is for the stipend and health insurance to come from the NIH Investigator and tuition support from the graduate university.  If the NIH investigator provides tuition support the allowance should reflect the equation of support for the Institutional Partnerships.  Since most individual students don’t come to NIH until their courses and major exams have been completed the tuition level should be at the lower level typical for PhD programs once students are doing only dissertation research.
