How Many Graduate Students are at the NIH?

Student Community
The NIH has over 320 graduate students from 70 universities doing dissertation research in the 21 institutes and centers.  The NIH partnerships accept 50-75 new graduate students each year.  Graduating students recommend the NIH to other graduate students and prospective students, citing the unparallel resources and highly supportive experts available to them.  In future years, the goal is to increase the number of graduate students at NIH to ~500.

Infrastructure Support for Students
The GPP recognizes that graduate students at NIH do not experience the typical educational experience as students completing their Ph.D. within the university laboratories.  To ensure that the NIH graduate students receive similar training experiences a series of orientation, workshops, and symposium events are scheduled annually to the university.  Below is a short description of the training events sponsored by the GPP:

  • Orientation: all day event for new graduate students
  • NIH Graduate Student Retreat: poster and presentations
  • Graduate Student Workshops targeted to needs of students in specific year of graduate training eg: Dissertation Proposal Writing, Grant Writing
  • Graduation ceremony and certificate presentation
  • Spring NIH Graduate Student Symposium
  • Individual advising sessions and tracking of progress
  • Teaching Training and opportunity to teach in FAES School
  • Graduate Student Council Activities
